The Etrog and the Lulav

Key verse – Leviticus 23:40.

Etrog and Lulav are not found in this passage, BUT –

The Etrog – A citrus fruit (large than a lemon) it is a knobby shaped fruit. It is also an Aramaic word – ‘meaning that which shines’. It has a good taste and fragrance.

The Lulav – is made from three species of trees.

  1. a) Palm branches. b) Leafy trees – Myrtle twigs.
  2. c) Willows of the brook.

The Etrog refers to the heart of man – wisdom.

The Lulav refers to the backbone – uprightness.

The Myrtle – refers to the eye – enlightenment.

The Willow – represents the lips – prayer, love.

The Physical Meaning.

This speaks of Israel’s wilderness journey: –

  1. Etrog – Fruits of the land promised.
  1. Lulav – Palm Branches – valleys and plains.
  1. Myrtle – 3 twigs from the boughs of trees.
  1. Willows – By the brooks to drink from.

 

The Waving – All four together then are to be waved up and down, North and South, East and West, showing the four points of the compass.

These being the four directions that come from and therefore belong to the Lord God Almighty – The Creator of Heaven and Earth. Amen.
