A Disciple's Growth
In Grace

Key verse: 2 Peter 3:18. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To Him be glory both now and forever. Amen.

 

Proposition: Grace is God’s unmerited favour towards us through His Son. It is therefore God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense.

 

Teaching: There are three areas for us to understand and study.

 

1. False Marks of Growth in Grace.                                                                                                                                                                     

a) An increase of religious knowledge. 

b) Pleasure in conversing on religious topics. 

c) Zeal for the cause of religion. 

 

2. True Marks of Growth in Grace. 

a) An increasing humility before God and others. 

b) Simplicity and sincerity of mind. 

c) An increasing hatred of falsehood and artifice. 

 

3. The Means to be used. 

a) Secret prayer between you and the Lord. 

b) A diligent study of the Word of God. 

c) Careful self-examination.

 
The Duty of Disciples.

 

“Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.” Matt 6:33.

  1. What is to be done by us? “Seek.” We are to seek earnestly, diligently, enthusiastically, steadily, with our whole heart, head, life.
  2. Who is to seek? All those who name Jesus as their Lord and Saviour. All who seek to do His will, all who have had an experience of grace and now have a new heart, a new purpose and a new hope.
  3. What shall we seek? God’s Kingdom and His righteousness.
 

Disciples are to be Steadfast.

What a Disciple should have.

  1. The Lord Jesus in his/her heart – Colossians 1:27.
  2. Glory in his/her face – Acts 6:15.
  3. The Spirit of God as his/her teacher – John 14:26.
  4. The fear of God to guide in all matters – Proverbs 8:13.
  5. The path of holiness to walk in – Isaiah 35:8.
  6. Heaven as their destination – John 14:2.
