This devotional is based on the subject of ‘Biblical Rest’ as defined by the Lord God Almighty in His perfect Word.
The Concise Oxford Dictionary defines the word ‘Rest’ as repose or sleep. Abstinence or freedom from exertion, activity or movement or care or molestation, a period of abstinence.
(All true of this world but what of a spirit filled life and the life to come?)
There are at least three words translated ‘rest’ in the Brit HaDashah.
1) Sabbatismos – ‘a Sabbaths rest’ as in Hebrews 4:9.
2) Anapausis – ‘an up rest’ as in Matthew 11:28.
3) Katapausis – ‘a down rest’ as in Hebrews 4:4.
As we go deeper there are 5 kinds or types of rest:-
A) Rest for the Sinner – Matthew 11:28.
At the Cross.
B) Rest for the Saint – Matthew 11:29.
In Subjection.
C) Rest in the Lord – Psalm 37:7.
In Confidence.
D) Rest with the Lord – 2 Thessalonians 1:7.
In Glory.
E) Rest that Remains – Hebrews 4:9.
Eternal.
We have now come full circle as we started with Hebrews 4:9 and we finish with it. ‘There remains therefore a rest for the people of God.’
This is the cycle of Hebraic thought in teaching, to seek and to search out, to compare and contrast the teachings of the Holy Scriptures.
Enjoy looking up the other verses that are all of Him. Blessings.
