The Prophet Jeremiah (Jeremiah 31:31-34) foretold of a New Covenant that would supersede the old Mosaic Covenant of blood
atonement through animal sacrifice.
a) It would be better because people could
keep it – being written on their hearts.
b) God would give them the power to keep it
through the Holy Spirit.
c) It would provide for the removal of sins
instead of just covering the past year’s sins.
d) This would be accomplished through the
atoning work of Yeshua/Jesus the Messiah.
e) It would be for Jew and Gentile being the
mystery of the ages.
If the Old Covenant had been permanent then God would never have promised a second and new covenant. Hebrews 7:19; 8:7; 10:1.
The new atonement and payment for sins was made by Messiah on the Cross. The debt to God has been paid and salvation was purchased for us and so there is now no need for the old system. It was temporary and foreshadowed the ‘New Covenant’. Matthew 26:28.
